Based at Columbia University, the Averting Maternal Death and Disability (AMDD) Program is a global program of research, policy analysis, and technical support that, since 1999, has collaborated with UN agencies, NGOs, and governments in more than 50 countries to reduce maternal mortality. AMDD has evolved into the most influential academic institution addressing social accountability, and health sector responsiveness and its impact on maternal health. This final award enables AMDD to strategically leverage new and continuing research projects and collaborations with civil society organizations in order to expand the evidence base, deepen the analysis, and influence the actions of key stakeholders at local, national, and global levels. Engagement in research forums, convenings on maternal health and social accountability, and active participation in global standard setting discussions promotes the policy impact of this research.

The Mailman School of Public Health, which trains more than 1,200 graduates annually, pursues an agenda of education, research, and service to address critical and complex public health issues affecting New Yorkers, the nation, and the world. Since it was established in 2008, the MacArthur Research Network on an Aging Society (Research Network) has convened an interdisciplinary group of scholars that has collaborated on an interrelated set of conceptual, analytical, and experimental projects that revolve around the core challenges and opportunities facing America as it becomes an aging society. This final award to the Research Network will support website communications and a symposium to discuss and disseminate the research.
