Established in 1992, Public Allies is a leadership development organization with the mission to create a just and equitable society and the diverse leadership to sustain it. Public Allies seeks to find and cultivate young leaders ages seventeen and older who commit themselves to ten months of service, working within a nonprofit or community-based organization. The program is offered in twenty-five cities, in partnership with over 450 nonprofit organizations, throughout the United States. Public Allies Chicago (PAC) launched in 1993 under the leadership of founding Executive Director, Michelle Obama. Today it remains one of the largest Public Allies programs in the nation. This renewal award supports its signature apprenticeship program, which works to diversify the talent pool and increase the number of low-income, people of color, and first-generation college students in nonprofit staff and leadership roles.
