Researchers with the Wildlife Conservation Society reported on findings of a 13-year study on how climate change affects coral reefs in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Researchers recorded data from underwater visual assessments of 2,500 reefs in 44 countries. With that data on coral health, the researchers found 17 percent of reefs are still healthy and need protection and 54 percent of the reefs could recover with intervention. The MacArthur-supported report highlights the need for broad scientific collaboration and responsive action on global environmental and conservation issues.
