A study published in Environmental Conservation investigates the impact of Health of People and Environment in the Lake Victoria Basin (HoPE-LVB)—a Pathfinder International project that integrates sexual and reproductive health concerns, economic opportunity, and conservation of biodiversity in Uganda and Kenya. With the intent to determine the impact of programs that integrate areas of work, as opposed to addressing them in isolation, the study found the community had valuable results from the program, such as ongoing investment in sustainable livelihoods and more equitable gender roles. Though the study raised concern about long-term stability of the outcomes, it found that the MacArthur-supported HoPE-LVB program has a significant impact on women’s equity and economic opportunity and that similarly integrated programs may have further successes.
