A report by the Stimson Center on Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia, the world’s largest inland fishery, suggests opportunities for system-scale planning for sustainable development that would support the region’s agricultural and energy needs while minimizing ecological impact. The monsoon pulse together with Tonle Sap Lake sustain the water resources in the country and the entire Mekong Basin, but ongoing development that fragments the waterways threatens the ecosystem and the communities that rely on it. The MacArthur-supported report makes recommendations including combining hydropower with other renewable energy sources, working with local communities, and managing irrigation with other governments across the region.
