A study by the FrameWorks Institute details several recommendations for more effectively engaging the public and involving influencers in public discourse about the risk posed by nuclear weapons and materials. In An Unthinkable Problem From a Bygone Era, FrameWorks finds that Americans think about nuclear issues as too big and specialized for ordinary people to affect, and they expect world leaders to take the lead in regulating and controlling them. As a result, even those who might have potential influence over the direction of nuclear policy dismiss the issue as not being worth their effort, and many assign nuclear risk to a low priority compared to other issues. The MacArthur-supported study details underlying patterns of thinking like these and provides specific recommendations for how advocates can communicate more strategically on the subject.
